fig 1.2 final outcome on gestalt principle 25/11/2020 |
This is the final design on gestalt principle which I chose to do closure principle, which it is not the full form of the entire thing but only the important parts of it. In order to do that, I then find a picture of an insect and trace out the important parts on it which you can clearly see the body, wings and also head, but I don't want to leave it simple like this, I also did add some details of it to make it looks more interesting. Therefore, you could see it is a dragon fly but it is not it's full form but you can guess what it is.
Exercise 2: emphasis & balance
I had use marker pen and pen to create this design. I had colored the ballet shoes with more color and details which it is the focus point I want to make which shows how people only focus on the beautiful side and for the injured leg, I just used 1 color of maker pen and pen to draw the outline. The message I want to send through this design is that we only focus on how ballet dancer bring us the beautiful dance but we always forgot that they really work hard on it, so we need to appreciate their hard work.
For this design, I had used black color pencil and marker pens. It is hard to control the marker pen because it is hard to blend colors together, so it doesn't come out with what I thought it would be. I think it is interesting to show the contrast with a black and white chair and a colorful one. In this design, what I want to show is that you can't see one's personality through their look. Some people might look boring but in their inside they are actually quite fun but they just don't want to show.

fig 1.5 final outcome on asymmetrical balance 25/11/2020 |
For this design, it is seperate to 2 parts, which is the sky and the ground. I had used 2 different colors which is green and purple scheme. The sky and ground have almost the same amount of space which where the balance is showed. The color were also balanced as it has same amount of green and purple used.
Exercise 3: repetition & movement

fig 1.6 final outcome on repetition 25/11/2020 |
For this design, I want to show the repetition of the key. I want to show the message of even a small little things in your life matter. House key is a things that are important but small. It is hard to produce a unique key for each house therefore they have their own unique parts.

fig 1.7 final outcome on movement 25/11/2020 |
For this design, I want to show movement, so I have draw 3 hands to make it looks like it is moving. I had used different shades of color, because I think when people are moving and the time would b different. Everyone will be different depends on the time going.
Exercise 4: harmony & unity

For this artwork, what I want to show is we should look at things from other perspective. So, I found an interesting photo from Pinterest, and recreate artwork from the picture.

Project 1 : Self portrait
1.10.2020-18.10.2020 (week 6 - week 8)

fig 1.12 project 1 self portrait final outcome 25/11/2020 |
This is the final outcome for my Project 1- self portrait. It shows that the head of me is being opened. I wanted to show that although I looks quiet and boring sometimes but after you getting know of me, you will know that I am quite funny sometimes and positive. I also want to show that I love drawing so that I had used pencil brushes to create strokes of black and white and color pencil sketches.
The design principle that I had applied:
Emphasis- The thing that I want to emphasis is the colorful eye of me that shows that I am creative.
Movement - The string in between the parts shows movement from the top parts of head to eyes and to the bottom parts of head.
Contrast- The contrast that I had applied here is the difference between the black and white drawing and the colorful eye drawing.
Project 2 : Sense of Place
18.10.2020- 30.10.202o (week 8 - week 10)
This is the final outcome of my final project. I had used my room as reference and produced this art work. I had imagined it as a combination of undersea and my room from the inspiration of my visual research. I think it is really interesting to imagine you are sleeping with all of the sea creature, it's like living under the sea. I had added an animal that are not really the same thing as I drew which is the cat because I love cat a lot but I never own one. I had used a color combination of blue and orange because I think it is a good combination. Blue represent depress and sad. Orange represent fun and cheerful. I want to show that everything have it's different side.
The design principle that I had applied:
golden ratio: I had apply golden ratio on this artwork and place the cat which I want to emphasis at the golden ratio point.
harmony: I had used complementary color for overall artwork.
emphasis: I had used different color for the cat to emphasis it.
repetition: repeat of fishes and bubble.
movement: the position of the fish and turtle moving the same way.
Final project : Visual Analysis
30.10.2020- 27.11.2020 (week 10 - week 14)
Phase 1 Observation
As I first saw this image, it makes me feel refreshing and natural. This is the first impression on this artwork. This design work is in portrait format with combination of portrait and landscape. The design of human scale in the design is huge. She is looking at the leave that is growing on her hand. From her pose, I feel that she is elegant and graceful. There are thin lines around the object on the design work. They are curving and organic lines that represent nature and peace. The main color that the designer used are different shades of green, blue, orange and yellow which is analogous color. The cool color of blue and green have a calming effect .I think the color used the most in this design is green which represent nature and lucky. The tone of this design work is positive, calm and peaceful. There are 3 layers of composition which are foreground as the mountain, midground as the human and background as the sky.

Phase 2 Analysis
The artwork had been organized by golden ratio. This artwork contain a movement of leads from the golden ratio that focus on the plant that the women is holding to her face and follow by the birds and fishes in same color around her, we come to the water fall from her hair and lastly the mountain. The emphasis is on the plant that the human is holding as the women is looking at the plant and it sits on golden ratio. The objects are also moving towards the direction of the plant to 、emphasis on the plant. There were also repetition of the fishes and birds going on the same direction to the human body. Repetition also could found in the mountain that around the human. The whole composition of birds and fishes created an "S" position and created a balanced visual. This design contain wide tonal range, for example that the mountain is having the darkest tone, following by the human and the last is the sky. This create an effect of good visual hierarchy with balance of positive and negative tone. There were also some grain texture to make the overall design looks interesting in the sense of it is not only plain colors.

Phase 3 Interpretation
This poster is one of the series poster for the Chinese cosmetic brand Baique Ling (百雀羚).This series of poster is created by Menghui. This series compare the solar terms to the goddess with different abilities. The title of this poster is called 'Spring Commences'. "It is represent of life. 'Mild breeze blowing earth, joyful and gentle breath has recovered." is the quote that the designer gave to this poster. Emerging from the clear spring in the mountains, the hair becomes a waterfall of flowing water, and the water leaps up into school of fish, and the tender buds in the hands symbolize the arrival of Lichun ( 1st solar term, at 3th of Feb). In my point of view, this design work contain the element of Chinese style illustration because most of the Chinese artwork that I had seen, they have thin lines, soft colors just like this design work.

Reflection
For this outcome what I had inspired by the design work that
Menghui did is the style of the design and also the concept of designing the
characteristic of women. For this design, I want to show that women could also
stand by herself and women are strong, and I want to give the message of women
should be confident. The tiger represent that women are brave. I also did
draw some thin and curvy line to show that the women are elegant, but they
could also be beautiful just like the butterfly below. I had also drawn this
woman as a cloud as she is wearing white because they always say that women are
unpredictable just like the clouds. I had also included the golden sun behind
the women because I think that women could also be like Sun was shining
brightly when they are confident.
Design principle that I had applied:
Golden ratio: I had placed the women's eye on the golden ration because I think that the whole design work is talking about women.
Repetition: the repetition of butterfly and they are
going to the same direction.
Movement: I think the clouds had shown movement
because they are going to the same direction and the repetition shows that they
are moving.
Balance: there are asymmetrical balance as the object are place on a
equal size of negative and positive place.
Harmony: I had used all analogous colours to make it looks equal as
in overall image.
Emphasis: The butterfly in different colours and the
size compare to the huge women give the sense of emphasis.
Typography: I had also included some
Chinese words as it is the poem which means women are not inferior to men.
REFLECTION
Experience: I enjoyed this module a lot because we have the freedom to produce what outcome that we like, there are not much restriction. I also enjoyed using different medium in every exercise. There were also regret that we can't go to campus and learn together with my classmate. I also did improved on my digital painting skill by using photoshop and Procreate. At the same time, I really appreciate how Ms. Maria gave us feedback to improve our design work before the submission every week.
Observation: I noticed that there are still some limitation in myself, for example like the exercise of watercolor for repetition and movement, I am not so familiar with the medium, so that the outcome is not that good. I still need a lot of practice on it.
Finding: I found that I could apply the things that I learned here in other module. For example, golden ratio. I used it for almost every module in this semester. I found that practice will improve your skill and how you think and plan your design. I also found that my blog could be more tidy up a little bit next time because it is hard to maintain the size of final outcome in blog.
