Design principles
Final project-Visual Analysis

LECTURES

Visual Analysis is a method if understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
(a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.)

The purpose of visual analysis can recognize the choice that designer made in creating the design, how the properties of design communicate ideas, content, or meaning.
Visual analysis help people read and critically interpret images.
Practicing visual analysis sharpens critical judgement skills and help people seeks out answer.

Visual Analysis can include three phases.
Phase 1: Observation
Phase 2: Analysis
Phase 3: Interpretation

Phase 1 Observation
Observation means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design and try to describe them carefully and accurate in your own words.
Do not read beforehand about the design at all

Phase 2 Analysis
Analysis requires to think about your observation and try to make statements about the work.
Think about how the specific visual elements will combine together to create a whole and what effect the whole has on the viewer.
How your eye is led through the work and why?

Phase 3 Interpretation
Your observations, description and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work and historical context that you can find in the trustworthy published sources.
What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created.

TASK

Part 1-Visual Analysis

research
I did some research on how to write visual analysis for artwork. I also did noted down some of the points that I think it's important.

Here are the notes that I organized.
1. We should consider the relationship between visual elements like (line, shape, form, value, color, texture, space) and how these interact to form design principle.
2. We should look at the subject, place or scene, how the people is placed and how is their pose.
3. We should see if there is any important details or props
4. The overall mood, my emotional response to this artwork
5. What event and surrounding environment have influenced the work
6. Is the work characteristic of an artwork
7. Composition and format
8. Structure and layout
9.Shape and form
10. Value and tone

Visual Analysis

Phase 1 Observation
As I first saw this image, it makes me feel refreshing and natural. This is the first impression on this artwork. This design work is in portrait format with combination of portrait and landscape. The design of human scale in the design is huge. She is looking at the leave that is growing on her hand. From her pose, I feel that she is elegant and graceful. There are thin lines around the object on the design work. They are curving and organic lines that represent nature and peace. The main color that the designer used are different shades of green, blue, orange and yellow which is analogous color. The cool color of blue and green have a calming effect .I think the color used the most in this design is green which represent nature and lucky. The tone of this design work is positive, calm and peaceful. There are 3 layers of composition which are foreground as the mountain, midground as the human and background as the sky.

Phase 2 Analysis
The artwork had been organized by golden ratio. This artwork contain a movement of leads from the golden ratio that focus on the plant that the women is holding to her face and follow by the birds and fishes in same color around her, we come to the water fall from her hair and lastly the mountain. The emphasis is on the plant that the human is holding as the women is looking at the plant and it sits on golden ratio. The objects are also moving towards the direction of the plant to 、emphasis on the plant.  There were also repetition of the fishes and birds going on the same direction to the human body. Repetition also could found in the mountain that around the human. The whole composition of birds and fishes created an "S" position and created a balanced visualThis design contain wide tonal range, for example that the mountain is having the darkest tone, following by the human and the last is the sky. This create an effect of good visual hierarchy with balance of positive and negative tone. There were also some grain texture to make the overall design looks interesting in the sense of it is not only plain colors.

Phase 3 Interpretation
This poster is one of the series poster for the Chinese cosmetic brand Baique Ling (百雀羚).This series of poster is created by Menghui. This series compare the solar terms to the goddess with different abilities. The title of this poster is called 'Spring Commences'. "It is represent of life.  'Mild breeze blowing earth, joyful and gentle breath has recovered." is the quote that the designer gave to this poster. Emerging from the clear spring in the mountains, the hair becomes a waterfall of flowing water, and the water leaps up into school of fish, and the tender buds in the hands symbolize the arrival of Lichun ( 1st solar term, at 3th of Feb). In my point of view, this design work contain the element of Chinese style illustration because most of the Chinese artwork that I had seen, they have thin lines, soft colors just like this design work.

Part 2- Design

research
The most important thing that design work inspired me is the Chinese style of illustration.  So I did more research on that.

sketches

I did some sketches of the design, after I had chose the 1st version because it fit what I want to pass the message on.

progression
fig 1.10 Chinese style illustration practice 13/11/2020

I did some practice on Chinese style illustration because their lines are always really thin and fine. Their line colors always change by the color of the object accordingly.

FINAL OUTCOME

fig 1.15 final design outcome 13/11/2020

Reflection

For this outcome what I had inspired by the design work that Menghui did is the style of the design and also the concept of designing the characteristic of women. For this design, I want to show that women could also stand by herself and women are strong, and I want to give the message of women should be confident. The tiger represent that women are brave. I also did draw some thin and curvy line to show that the women are elegant, but they could also be beautiful just like the butterfly below. I had also drawn this woman as a cloud as she is wearing white because they always say that women are unpredictable just like the clouds. I had also included the golden sun behind the women because I think that women could also be like Sun was shining brightly when they are confident.

Design principle that I had applied:
Golden ratio: I had placed the women's eye on the golden ration because I think that the whole design work is talking about women.
Repetition: the repetition of butterfly and they are going to the same direction.
Movement: I think the clouds had shown movement because they are going to the same direction and the repetition shows that they are moving.
Balance: there are asymmetrical balance as the object are place on a equal size of negative and positive place.
Harmony: I had used all analogous colors to make it looks equal as in overall image.
Emphasis: The butterfly in different colors and the size compare to the huge women give the sense of emphasis.
Typography: I had also included some Chinese words as it is the poem which means women are not inferior to men.

FEEDBACK
week 11: Ms. Maria said that I did a good job on the first phrase, and I could add on the the point of the designer added the texture on the design work. She said that I could proceed to do research and started sketching about my ideas.

week 12: Ms. Maria looked at my final outcome, she said that I could draw some connection between the tiger and the women. I could also improve on the butterfly  and the sun by doing some glowing effect and make the lines on butterfly fine and thin and change the color of the butterfly to show harmony better. I could also add some Chinese words on top of the design.

week 13: Ms. Maria looked at my final outcome and she said that it is good and I could submit it already.

REFLECTION
Experience: I had a great experience doing this project as I always want to try how to draw Chinese style digital painting. I also had some difficulties like I am not so good at drawing thin lines digitally, so that I did some practice and I also watch a lot of videos from Chinese website to learn how they did Chinese style illustration.

Observation: I had learn how to observe how Chinese painting is. I did some research on Chinese traditional arts, I think it is really beautiful of how they did the fine line and it takes a lot of practice to draw those fine and thin lines.

Finding: I found that we need to find the art that we want to observe and recreate to have the motivation to do it.
