week 5 (5.2.2021)
For this week, we have our data collection week. At first, we contacted the people that we wanted to do interview with who are Ling Goh, Chong Kuet Aun and Pan Yue Jiao. Unfortunately, they didn't have the time to be interview by us. After that, we try to find more people that are suitable for us too interview. We also change the method of contact them to have bigger chance to interview them.  After that, me and Jia Yee managed to interview 3 Peking Opera actress in Beijing and Taiwan, who are Mr Rong Yan, Ms Huang and Mr Xu Yan Kai.

While interview Mr. Rong Yan, I found that he is really friendly and he would share a lot of experience when he is on stage and how Peking Opera actors try no to laugh on the stage. He also did send me a lot of videos of how Peking Opera actors are dressed up before they are on stage. To say this is an interview, but I feel like it is more like a fun and relax conversation between Mr. Rong Yan and I. This makes me want to find more on Peking Opera.

Yuan Ting, Xin Yee, Jia Yee and I will be translating the transcript of the interview as we want to make it more convenience for the actress to communicate with us.  There were also a sentence that touched me that makes me feel that Peking Opera should be preserved and assimilate in Mr. Xu Yan Kai's interview answer. " 演員在台上的呈現就如同一件漂亮的藝術品一般,不容許有任何瑕疵與汙點,此時台上鑼鼓聲一響,演員從上場們出場,當舞台燈光打在演員臉上的那一刻,鑼鼓喧天精彩的京劇就開始了" which means "The performance of actors on stage is like a beautiful work of art. No blemishes or stains are allowed. At this time, when the gongs and drums are sounded on stage, the actors will come out from the stage. The moment the light hits the face of the actor, the wonderful Peking Opera begins." This is really beautiful and I can understand how Mr. Xu Yan Kai are so passion on Peking Opera.

After that, everyone would need to do visual research on Peking Opera face painting according to their story and analysis the visual and the meaning behind. Maximum 3 characters and minimum 2 characters. This is for in the final project, we want to let our target audience to know about the meaning behind the Peking Opera mask and the story behind, so we need to do research on it before hand. We also tried to find character that are more famous to let those who are beginner on Peking Opera know it better. I had chose Bao Zheng, Zhang Fei and Cheng Yao Jin as I know these characters, but I didn't know they are part of Peking Opera.

I also went on google map to take a look on Chengyici Peking opera theatre and Huguang guild hall. For Chengyici Peking Opera theatre, I only could look at the outside on the building, however, for huguang guild hall, I was able to 'walk' inside which I think it is so cool! I took a look on 360 degree inside the hall. This is the first time that I know how is it looks like inside Peking Opera theatre. It looks really crowed and beautiful there, I wish I have a chance to visit there in the future. I then research on the photos of Huguang guild hall which it looks so stunning.

After having consultation time with Dr. Jinchi, we did more research on Malaysian youth culture to know more about how we could assimilate Peking Opera to Malaysia. At the same time, we also did another google survey in a short time. We are appreciate that the number of replies that we received was enough for us to do the analysis.

FEEDBACK

week 5- 8.1.2021
  • Don’t try to be too fancy in our design, we need to retain the face painting

  • Side some examples

  • Think how to assimilate this culture in Malaysia.

  • Perhaps we can in-cooperate with something local.

  • Do more research on Malaysia culture and think how to use our design and speak to Malaysian. Perhaps we can name  our product in a Malaysian style.

  • We should not separate the design with the color

  • Come out with a definition on what is Peking Opera.

  • Geometric style looks too playful but the illustration style need to depends on the target audience

  • Remember to write a summary of the findings

week 7- 15.2.2021
Full data collection doc: Thorough analysis of survey data that could result in possible ideas to explore with. Other data collection covers a wide range, showing your consideration of various aspects encompassing the target audience and ideas for the design.

Recorded presentation: There is much clarity in everyone's presentation but as improvement for future, do speak rather than read. However, I do understand that there could be reasons such as language proficiency and you do not want to miss out some important points while presenting.

REFLECTION

In this data collection week, I had learned deeper knowledge of Peking Opera. It was hard for us to find the interviewees as actors are always busy as they have a lot of performance or training. However, we managed to find 3 interviewees to conduct an interview with. I guess this is a kind of achievement for our group.

In the beginning of the data collection, I came out with the questions for the google survey to be sent to Malaysian that are between 16-25. At the google survey, I think there are a lot of mistakes like the age group should be asked at the beginning and some of the questions could be in multiple choice questions that are easier to analyse at the end. In the end of the google survey analysis, there was a lot of misunderstanding of Peking Opera among the Malaysian youth therefore I think Peking Opera needs to be assimilated and introduced to Malaysian youth.

After that, I had sent some interview requests to some potential Peking Opera actors that I think they will be able to answer our questions. However, I was being rejected or there were no replies. After that, I saw Mr. Rong Yan profile on Facebook, in his profile, I can know that he is teaching Peking Opera, at the same time a Peking Opera actor, therefore I think I could try to ask him for our interview. After that, he replied to my message in half an hour and he is willing to have the interview. I was very happy and we started our interview at the spot as the questions were prepared beforehand. We conduct the interview in Wechat by the method of voice message. To be say it is an interview, but I think it is more like a sharing, relaxing conversation between us. He answered more than the question I asked and also sent me some videos and photos which helped me to know more about Peking Opera.

After that, I went on VR street view experience with google earth and also google map. I think it is a great experience as I could move around and see the environment around the place and I managed to get into a theatre of Peking Opera which is my first time seeing what it looks like. I hope that I could go there physically in the future.

Apart from that, I also watched a lot of videos and observed the information on them to have a better understanding of Peking Opera. There was a video that I remember the most, which is the movie clip of BaWangBieJi, it shows how tough it is when the Peking Opera actors get trained when they are learning the basics. Mistakes are not allowed and the movie doesn’t have a happy ending, and I remember and think of the ending a lot.

There are still a lot of things that are not known to others about Peking Opera, so I think there's a must to correct the misunderstanding of Peking Opera among the Malaysian youth and the best way would be the visual language.
