fig 1.3 art style and color palette brainstorming (13.2.2021)

After that, we brainstorming about the art style in Miro board, all of us agreed on doing geometric style with vintage Chinese color palette.

fig 1.4 content brainstorming  (13.2.2021)

After that, we brainstorm on the product that we wanted to do for our brand, we had seperated into 2 categories of Mamak collection set and Mamak  fashion set.

Mamak collection set is to presenting our brand image to our audience, Malaysian youth to raise awareness of Peking Opera. For this collection, there are apron, coaster, food container and so on.

Mamak fashion set is to assimilating Peking Opera with current trend among Malaysian youth, which we apply Peking Opera face painting to comfortable wearing set of Malaysia, for example, t shirt, short pants, slippers and so on.

fig 1.5 final color chosen under black background (20.2.2021)

fig 1.6 final color chosen under white background (20.2.2021)

These are the color that I finalize and confirmed by group, as our theme is using strong visual color of Peking Opera to attract Malaysian youth, so I thought these color are nice to use while we are doing our final project.

fig 1.7 brainstorming on typefaces (20.2.2021)

After that I found some interesting font which we might apply to our content writing which Jia Yee will come out with tray paper design that we will introduce historical characters that are perform in Peking Opera.  The second Chinese font is nice as I think it matches with our theme. The 3rd font is what I found in Behance , which I think the stars on top of the 'i' looks similar to one of the role in Peking Opera Chou's eyes shape.

fig 1.8 sketches to set style (20.2.2021)

After that, we decided to let me draw sketches to comfirm on the art style and then everyone will follow my style to draw on the products. At the same time, Jia Yee will come out with the summarized story on the characters, which we found on the data collection week.  Zhi Vei and Kinson will write on the brand concept and rationale.

week 8 (27.2.2021)

During our group meeting, everyone put on their sketches onto the progression docs. After that,  Zhi Vei came out an idea of doing website design to have a better present on our brand. We all think that it is an good idea. After that, we distribute our jobs. Zhi Vei and Xin Yee will be working on the website. Jia Yee would be working on the layout of the labels that would come with our products and also tray paper design that we wanted to let our customer to read at while waiting their food. I think this is a quite interesting way to educate them about Peking Opera. Yuan Ting will be working with me to digitalize the assets. Kinson will be the one who find all the mock ups template, and I would work with him to put on the design onto the mock ups following everyone's sketches. I would also in charge of digitalizing our logo.

fig 1.16 logo attempt 1  (27.2.2021)

fig 1.17 other attempts of logo  (27.2.2021)

First, I start with digitalizing the logo and I was very upset because it doesn't turns out well. And I showed it to Yuan Ting as we had our meeting ourselves to discuss on the assets that we need to work together. She also thinks that it doesn't looks how it is like in my sketch of logo.  During our meeting, I suddenly think of the font that Yuan Ting design during her last semester, which is call creamy and I think the stroke of the font could suit our brand, so I asked her to try on digitalize another version on our brand base on her semester 1 typography font.

fig 1.18 final logo design  (27.2.2021)

fig 1.19 final logo design  (27.2.2021)

And these are the attempts of her which I think it is stunning and suit our brand really well. After we showed it to our group members, they think it is really nice also, so this is the final design of our brand logo.

fig 1.21 assets drawing process  (27.2.2021)

At the same time, I digitalize on our assets with Yuan Ting. Above are the progression of my assets drawing. As an exchange as Yuan Ting helped me to work on the logo, I will take the rest of the assets that she haven't draw yet and refine some of her assets.

fig 1.22 showing repeat tool  (27.2.2021)

I really like to use the repeat tool in Illustrator as I am sure that the patterns on the face painting is balanced which it is one of the special thing about Peking Opera.

fig 1.23 face painting assets that I draw ( 28.2.2021)

These are the face painting assets that I draw . After that I started to work on drawing assets of teh tarik.

fig 1.24 teh tarik assets (28.2.2021)

These are the teh tarik design that I did. After that, we had our group meeting together which we check on everyone's progression.

fig 1.25 putting design into mock up templates  (29.2.2021)

fig 1.26 putting design into mock up templates  (29.2.2021)

After that, I found out that the workload of  Kinson's are too big because he need to apply every design into the mock up template in a short time as the due date are too soon.  Therefore, I helped him to work together on putting the design into the mock ups that he found. There are total of 18 mock ups that we need to put, so I would take up half of it and Kinson will take another half.

fig 1.27 layout designing process  (29.2.2021)

After we had done our part of putting design into the mock ups, I compile all of them into an Ai file to make the size looks consistent and also putting the headings and logo onto the layout. After that, from the feedback from Jia Yee, she thinks that some of the layout heading and logo are not consistent in individual products, so I send the file to Yuan Ting and asked her to arrange it for me as I need to prepare the slides for design showcase.

REFLECTION

Experience: In this whole module, I had a great experience with my groupmates, and it is also my first time being a leader, I think I had definitely gain some leadership skill as I had learn a lot of things from this module for example how to care about other's feeling while we are doing things together. However, I think I also have some insufficient like, I am more towards a person who like to get things done myself, so in these projects, I slowly gives out things for my groupmates to do, I think this is also one of my improvement.

Observation: I observed that actually combining 2 culture is hard. As we need to consider a lot of things like if we are putting the design in a certain product, is it appropriate to 2 culture? For example like putting our facial design on to the slippers, is it appropriate and also will the people who loves Peking Opera see this, will they feel offended? I think this is what we need to think of while we are combining 2 cultures, to show our respect.

Findings:  I found that during these projects, I had learned a lot of things about Peking Opera and I appreciate this artform a lot, not just about the facial painting. That day, during Chinese New Year, there were a Peking Opera show that performed in TV, every family members are sitting on the living hall and they asked my grandmother to change the channel, I ask them for reason, because they think it is boring as they could sing a words for 30 munities long. I think we should be patient during the show actually, because I think the rhythm of our lifestyle nowadays are too fast, we should slow down our steps to wait for these beautiful artform.
