TASKS
In this project, we were given 3 texts and we would need to choose 1 of the three to create text formatting and text expression. I had chosen the first article which is 'The impact of Bauhaus on modern culture' because I think it is the most interesting topic compare to the other two.
research
I did some research on the topic itself. Here are some pictures that I found. Th characteristics of Bauhaus design is that it is quite straightforward simplicity, conducive to mass production, modernity.

sketches
I did some type expression sketches and also text formatting design sketches.

Progress
After that I apply the sketches and trace it using illustrator. Here are the 5 design that I did for the headline. I used the same typefaces which is Futura but different font.

composition sketches
After that, I want to try more possibility for the formatting text, thus I sketches more thumbnails size design.

After that, I try to apply some of them or combination of them to make the following design. At first, I wanted to create the slanted effect for this project but I found it too risky to not have cross alignment and it is hard to follow the guide. I did the following 6 composition, but I feel that I still have a lot of space to improve.

Our submission is extended, so I try to make more composition as I am not so satisfy with the outcome from last week. Therefore, here are the three options that I can chose for my final submission.
More composition trying

As I asked feedback from my friends, they say that the circle should not be here for no purpose, so I try to fit in the concept of Bauhaus turns 100 with replacing the 2 circles from the outcome last week. I also found that the lowercase is interesting for Bauhaus so I want to maintain it in the type expression.

FEEDBACK
week 6
General feedback : Mr. Vinod looked at my final outcome, and he said that my design was OK but I need to change somethings.
Specific feedback : Mr. Vinod said that my text need to be align with the stripe for my text expression, the stripe need to be longer. I should be more careful on the space between the pages as it could be cut out.
feedback from my friend : Jing Wen say that the circle of my design should have a purpose on there.
week 7
Specific feedback : Mr. Vinod looked at my final outcome, he said that I could move all the text to the other side, make alignment on the text and make sure the characters of the text is correct. Racking could be better. Text could be align with the text.
REFLECTION
Experience : I am a little bit stress because I think my typography design doesn't fit what Mr. Vinod expecting. I think it is hard to do the kerning perfectly. I am still struggling on how to make it smoother. But overall, I think it is quite fun to explore different kind of things and I learned new stuff like Bauhaus which I didn't know there were such things before this project.
Observation : For this project, I noticed that I need to pay extra attention on class and lecture videos because I kept forgetting about things that are important. I should note them down next time.
Finding : I found that there are still a lot of space for me to improve and I should learn how to make minimalistic design and don't make things too complicated.

Design elements : Understanding the Rules and Knowing When to break them
fig 2.1 book cover (5.10.2020)
Rules for making good design. Rules can be broken- but never ignored.
1. Have a concept. It doesn't matter how amazing the thing is to look at; without a clear message, it's an empty although beautiful, shell.
2. Communicate don't decorate. Know what each visual element does and why, or choose another with purpose.
3. Universal. we should draw upon humanity's share narratives o form and metaphor and make connections, not boundaries.
4. Speak with one visual voice. When one element seems out of place or unrated, it disconnects from the totality and message is weakened.
5. If you can do it with less, then do it. This is a riff on the 'less is more ' theory.
6. Create space-don't fill it. Negative space is critical to good design.
7. Be aware of symmetry.
8.Pick color on purpose
9. less color is more.

For this week, instead of finding books from Taylor's library, I found a pdf about typography online which I found it really useful. It has key commands note on illustrator and InDesign. A part from that, it contain the matches of typefaces pair. I think it would be convenient for me.
