INSTRUCTIONS

TASKS

Exersice 1: Vormator Challenge

Exercise 2: Vector Landscape Illustration

EXERCISE 1 : Vormator Challege

first draft

This is the first draft of my character design. As you can see the first sketch is not that good, I adjusted the size of the body and head to make it look more balance. After the body structure is done, I realized that the hat size and shape is not accurate, so I edited it. After it done, I added feature of face and the weapon it is using. Lastly, I added some of the details on the costume.

color studies

I did some color studies for my character, mostly on my character's costume, I tried some color combination to see which one suit my character personality better. However, I only changed the color of my character costume but not character itself.

Progression

I realized that there is a way to change the color faster, it really helped my on character color studies.

First you need to select the object you want the color to be change. Next, go to edit > edit color > recolor artworks. After that, you can change the color according to the color you want or you can enter the color code.

first outcome

I found that the first color combination fits my character better as I want my character to be express like ancient Japanese soldier and the costume suit my character's narrative. After that, I add on some gradient on my character design to make it look more fine.

AFTER FEEDBACK

After the feedback of Ms. Anis, I notice that my character design is not unique enough, so I sketched some more and tried different combination of the shapes.

After Ms. Anis had gave me some feedback, I tried out some more character designs by playing with the shapes combinations.

FINAL OUTCOME

fig 1.18 final character design 19/9/2020

This is my final outcome for my character design. I had maintain the costume from my previous character design because I think it's the unique part from my first character design, but I had changed the outer look of my character.

fig 1.22 landscape ver 1  11/9/2020

This is version 1 of landscape for character card design, which I take it from the exercise during class. For this version, I try to make it looks more calm. For the color I try to make it balance for warm and cold color. I think it turns out quite well.

fig 1.24 landscape ver 2 11/9/2020

This is version 2 of landscape for character card design, I tried to make a different color for mountain instead of green. I think this version is simpler than version 1. However, I think this looks too dark and my character costume design are also dark colors so it doesn't stand out the character.

Final outcome

fig 1.25 trading card design (front) 11/9/2020

fig 1.26 trading card design (back) 11/9/2020

I had chose version 1 as my final design as I think it suits my character theme more and I had use some of the element to make the trading card. I also simplify the design to make the back of the trading card as I want to keep my design look simple.

EXERCISE 2 : Vector landscape Illustration

Inspiration/ mood board

fig 2.1  1st stage research 25/9/2020

I try to find some interesting scene from movie and also some landscape photo. After that, I open the file that Ms. Anis sent in TiMes, it give me an inspiration of doing an ancient Chinese style landscape.

fig 2.2 2nd stage research 25/9/2020

Therefore, I try to find reference photo of ancient Chinese building and how the way it will apply the rule of third.

fig 2.3 3rd stage research 25/9/2020

During my research time, I found this illustrator artist that create awesome ancient Chinese illustration, I like the way that he uses the colors. Here are some example of his work on .

Sketches

fig 2.7 sketch ver 4 25/9/2020

fig 2.8 sketch ver 5 25/9/2020

here are the 5 sketches that I had done, At first, my original plan was using fig 2.5 as my final design reference photo.

fig 2.9 sketch ver 6 25/9/2020

however, the day that Ms Anis and Mr. Fazil teach us about perspective and how to use illustrator create perspective buildings, so I want to try apply that into my landscape design. So, I came up with the design of fig 2.9 .

Progression

fig 2.10 progression 25/9/2020

I had place in my sketches in and trace it out.

fig 2.11 progression 25/9/2020

After that, I opened the perspective guide to correct my perspective.

fig 2.12 progression 25/9/2020

After that, I filled in the colors according to the color that I want.

fig 2.13 progression 25/9/2020

fig 2.14 progression 25/9/2020

At first, I want to have some kind of river to make the foreground for my landscape design, butI found it not suitable for this design, so I replaced it with the idea of me sitting at the rooftop, looking down to the street

fig 2.15 progression 25/9/2020

This is the first draft of my final outcome, but it seems like lack of something.

fig 2.16 progression 25/9/2020

After that, I seek for Ms. Anis feedback, she said that it is nicely done but the foreground looks a bit spartan, and she gave me the idea of this foreground design.

fig 2.17 progression 25/9/2020

After that, I also look for some of my friend's feedback. Tze Earn said that my color are strong but it would look better if I follow the golden ratio for my design. Jon said that my perspective of pagoda is different of other building and instead of putting outline, I should put some gradient for my roof for the buildings. After that I tried to look for feedback form non design student, so I asked my brother for his feedback, he said that my shadow on the floor are weird.

fig 2.18 progression 25/9/2020

This is how it looks like after I adjusted everything, but I noticed that the background are a little bit empty and the floor seems a little bit weird so I had add on somethings on it.

FINAL OUTCOME

This is the final outcome for my landscape design.

fig 2.19 final outcome 25/9/2020

' Majestic old structures adorned with orbs of light and hope,
peach of mind, joy at heart '

FEEDBACK

project 1a : After submission, I asked Ms. Anis for the feedback for my character, she said that I should put my character in card design in different way. My character is cute but it is something that it's normal. Ms. Anis was looking for unique character design.

project 1b : I seek for Ms. Anis feedback, she said that it is nicely done but the foreground looks a bit spartan, and she gave me the idea of this foreground design.

REFLECTION

project 1a :  I was confused during this exercise because I thought that I could use procreate for this design but it is only for sketches. As I doesn't really know how to use illustrator at the time, the tutorial session that Mr. Faizal gave was really helpful. After Ms. Anis's feedback, I will try to think more unique character design for this exercise.

project 1b :  I am really happy about this exercise because we are not restricted in shapes anymore. I did found some nice illustration artist that I could learn from them. I think my design still have a lot of space to improve, so I think that it is really helpful to ask opinion and feedback from people.
