TASK

week 5 (26.4.2021)
In this week, we were asked to use visual and type in combination to create a key artwork to be later used in collateral. The focus here is to use visual elements and graphical elements and the title in an experimentalize conceptual and visually attractive manner.

I had chosen Bauhaus as my topic of this Project because I was introduced to Bauhaus in semester 1, but that time I wasn't so sure about the meaning of Bauhaus as I didn't do enough research on it so I am glad that I have another chance to learn about Bauhaus.

After I had chosen the topic, I did some research on Bauhaus.

fig 1.1 Bauhaus lecture video on Youtube 2.5.2021

In this video, there are a lot of information on Bauhaus. After watching the video, I recorded down the notes ( in further reading section) that I learned. After I understand what Bauhaus is, I started to find visual reference on Pinterest.

fig 1.4 visual reference 2.5.2021

These are some of the visual reference that I found. After that, I started to do my key artworks. I had tried a few attempts.

fig 1.5 attempt 1 2.5.2021

fig 1.6 attempt 1 reference 2.5.2021

In this attempt, I tried to focused on ABC as you can see it's a big small letter a, b, and c in the key artwork logo, after that, I put on the words in the font of Bauhaus font. I was also inspired by the building of Bauhaus in Berlin that I found the picture online.

fig 1.7 attempt 2 2.5.2021

After that, I tried another version that is simplified that attempt 1. I also used the font of Kabel for the topic words.
fig 1.8 attempt 3 2.5.2021

In this attempt, I tried to rearrange my attempt 2 into a letter B which stand for Bauhaus. and also improved to reading order, but it doesn't look quite well for me.

fig 1.8 attempt 4 2.5.2021

After that I tried another one with small letter b but it doesn't look quite well for me as well.

fig 1.9 attempt 5 2.5.2021

In this attempt, I tried to apply the signature poster of Bauhaus which is in fig 1.2 the right one. and try to make things asymmetry.

fig 1.10 attempt 6 2.5.2021

In this attempt, I was inspired by the chair of Bauhaus designed chair. I also focused on the letter ABC in this attempt.

FEEDBACK

week 6 (3.5.2021)
General feedback:
Be careful with the font size.
Work on black and white first for the key artwork Try to avoid colored background Make it free-standing Specific feedback: The artwork did give the vibe of Bauhaus It looks great It looks like a logo that is free standing there is a good balance The artwork did embody the event There are no unnecessary use of a non-objective element The circle is not aligned to the center ask family or friends to see which one is more impactful There are some good ones in my attempts

week 7 (10.5.2021)
General feedback:
the font size should be around 16-22
Specific feedback: the works need to be bigger as it would be put very small as a key artwork. Week 9 (24.5.2021) General feedback: The point size should be around 16-22 Specific feedback: Points size is too big Good job in terms of the work done You could move the text all beside to leave a big gap for your 'staircase' layout. It's well-aligned The ticket font size is too small, as the ticket is very small. Always use the same layout and style if you are doing things like tickets. Good job! Well done.

week 10 (30.5.2021)
Specific feedback:
The gif is a little bit boring
the font size is too small
the ball effect is interesting

REFLECTION

week 5 (26.4.2021)
Experience: During this exercise, I think I definitely know more information about Bauhaus than in semester 1. That, we all must know that while doing any design, we must do research on and know what we are doing at the same time. During this exercise, I think I had gone through a hard time figuring out what is 'Less is more. I tried to reduce the non-objective element as much as I can but I was also worried about my less is not actually more;-;. Therefore, I had a hard time with this project, I hope it would turn out well.
Observation: During the process, I think I noticed that less is more is not easy to achieve as each element that you put in must be relevant and meaningful
Finding: I found out that learning from YouTube could learn as well as finding visual references online. It is better for me to learn as I am more of a visual person than a reading person, so it's easier for me to observe and understand what Bauhaus is. Although I am not fully understand yet but I think I had known at least the basic and some history about it.

week 6 (3.5.2021)
Experience: It's hard to choose the correct color for the key artwork as it cannot be changed later on. To be honest, I am not satisfied with the final outcome. I had let my friends and family choose either 'a' or 'B' as my final, but I couldn't decide which is better and more useful as a key artwork. I myself like 'a' but most people think 'B' is more impactful and I had tried to put them in A3 size paper in AI, 'B' actually looks better. Therefore, I had chosen 'B' as my final key artwork.
Observation: I had noticed that sometimes you need to listen to people's opinions and rethink your work. Although they might not in the design industry, the feedback given was sometimes helpful.
Finding: Sometimes the work looks simple, but it could be impactful.

week 7 (10.5.2021)
Experience: POSTER IS REALLY HARD FOR ME. My sense of layout is not good, I had a difficult time in Task 1B. ;-; I had tried a lot of attempts to find the best of my work. I had sitting in front of the laptop from 3pm to midnight 3pm but I couldn't figure out what's the best solution for it. However, I had managed to complete the task, and I think it actually turns out well. Doing collaterals was fun. I had some 'putting the design into mockups' experience from the previous semester while doing the 'Peking Opelah' project.
Observation: From the feedback from Mr. Vinod last week, I found that we need to decide on our own design, think ourselves, which is the best, be critical. That's how we are learning.
Finding: Before I started my poster, I had found out that my work is actually similar to one of my seniors which he also uses red as the main color and big 'B' as his key artwork. I tried to avoid plagiarizing him. So that I had changed my color theme. Although mine is not as good as him, I wanted to at least get my work 'special'.

week 8 (17.5.2021)
Independent week.

week 9 (24.5.2021)
Experience: In this week, the most challenging thing for me is to balance my academic work and club work. I am currently a design team leader in a virtual charity event, which the workload is extremely high. We need to design 60+ social media posts, entitlements, and a lot of other things to care about as a team. However, I had learned something similar in the event that it could be used on this project for example how to find mockups and size of the logo and so on. It was a very tiring experience, that I almost sleep at 4-5am every day and need to wake up at 9am at least. I hope that I could handle this and would not affect the quality of my academic work.
Observation: During this project, I had noticed that I had forgotten a lot of tricks to be used in after effect. The e-invitation is so time-consuming to think and create although it looks simple. Of course, it needs to be simple, because Bauhaus is about 'Less is more';-;.
Finding: I found out that it's quite fun to work on collaterals, I love it. I like to try a lot of different cool mockups. I didn't show every collateral that I tried as I think some of them are failed that I cannot accept.

FURTHER READING
week 5 (26.5.2021)

fig 2.1 YouTube video about Bauhaus 2.5.2021

In this week's further reading, I had chose a YouTube lecture video about Bauhaus for me to better understanding and create designs in Project 1. It is a fully 1 hour + video, I managed to watched it all as I open 1.75 speed for this video. I had learned a lot of things in this video, below are my screenshots and notes.

fig 2.2 screenshot of the video 2.5.2021

fig 2.3 screenshot of the video 2.5.2021

fig 2.4 screenshot of the video 2.5.2021

Key take away:
  • Bauhaus is known to the general public as a style of anything geometric functional or modern.
  • However, objects were designed for functionality rather than adherence to a visual style
  • the essential features were order, asymmetry, and a basic rectangular grid structure.
  • the new typography is defined as a rejection of the classical rules of typographic symmetry
  • the movement inspired by a general degradation  of typography, a response to new printing technologies allowing designers to break free from the confines of the traditional type.

week 6 (3.5.2021)

This is a book that I found on Taylor's library website, but I only could preview several pages from it. However, I think it's enough for quick reading.

Key take away from this book:
  • The different elements that will comprise a design, predominantly the type and images could be treated as separate components that are to be arranged on the page with clear distinctions between them.
  • The form that a layout of work takes is driven by the function of the design, the ideas and information it has to communicate, the medium in which this will occur and target audience.
  • Many types of publication need to contain adjunct information whether displayed as a contents page, a formal index, a glossary of terms, or a list of contact addresses.
  • Orientation refers to the plane or direction in which the elements of a design are used.
week 7 (10.5.2021)

In this week, I had explored an Instagram page called graphica.ai which I think it's super cool with those design and collaterals. The use of the color combination and composition had inspired me for my collaterals.

week 9 (24.5.2021)

As I had done a lot of typography book reading, I wanted to find something new for this week's further reading section. I had found this layout design on the design news website that I always read. A team called Here Design had designed a new since cream recipe book. The first that watched on my eyes is the typeface, it is the typeface that I used for my project 1 for Interactive design. It looks cute and cool. After that, the layout looks so clear and the illustration looks nice as well. I like the use of color.
